A warning has been issued for heavy snowfall in western and central Latvia today, announced by the Center of Environment, Geology, and Meteorology of Latvia.
Until 17:00, a yellow warning is in effect, with 5-8 centimeters of snow expected in some areas of the mentioned regions. However, in the evening and overnight on Tuesday, the warning level will be upgraded to orange as snowfall continues, potentially resulting in snow cover reaching up to 10 centimeters in certain locations.
Moreover, temperatures are forecasted to drop below zero, leading to icy road conditions and reduced visibility during snowfall.
In the eastern part of the country, predominantly rain is anticipated, with no significant snow accumulation expected.
Strong north to northwest winds are predicted today, reaching gusts of 12-17 meters per second (m/s) and up to 20 meters per second along the coast.
Maximum air temperatures are forecasted to range from 1 to 5 degrees Celsius, reaching up to 6 to 9 degrees in the far east of the country.
In Riga, the weather is expected to be cloudy with rain and wet snow, possibly resulting in a light snow layer. Gusty north to northwest winds are expected, with maximum air temperatures ranging from 2 to 3 degrees Celsius.
The State Fire and Rescue Service (VUGD) has issued a warning for increased north-northwest winds in gusts up to 20 m/s in Riga between 9:00 a.m. and 12:00 p.m. VUGD advises caution as tree branches, loose objects, or debris may be airborne, potentially disrupting outdoor activities. The VUGD warning is valid from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.
“Latvijas Valsts ceļi” urges drivers to allocate extra time for their journeys, assess road conditions carefully, and adjust driving speeds accordingly while maintaining a safe distance.
