On Thursday, November 9, the launch of Tartu’s 2024 European Capital of Culture program will unfold in Rīga, promising a delightful evening of laughter. This isn’t due to any grievances from Latvians regarding Tartu’s upcoming year in the spotlight (after all, Liepāja is set to follow suit in 2027), but rather because the launch event will feature a ‘Big Baltic Roast,’ showcasing some of the Baltic states’ finest comedians.
The lineup includes Latvian comedians Rūdolfs Kugrēns and Kalvis Trokša, joined by Estonian humorists Aleksander Eeri Laupmaa and Maiduk, along with Lithuanian humorist Lukas Bunkus. The best part? Admission to the Big Baltic Roast is absolutely free.
Ironically, the event will take place at ‘Tu Jau Zini Kur’ (‘You already know where’), situated on Tallinas iela (Tallinn street), making it a fitting venue for the occasion, second only to Tērbatas (former name for Tartu) Street.
“The slogan of the Tartu 2024 program is ‘Arts of Survival.’ We believe that the ability to laugh not only at others but also at oneself is both an art and a skill that brings the Baltic States’ residents together and empowers us. How many toes do Latvians really have? What’s the average speed of an Estonian? Can Lithuania’s renowned basketball team bounce back from their defeat by the Latvian brothers? The friendship of the Baltic States raises many unanswered questions, and that’s why Tartu 2024 invites Riga’s residents to enjoy a good laugh at the Big Baltic Roast, where comedy masters will compete to showcase their humorous prowess,” remarks Kuldar Leis, CEO of Tartu 2024.
During the intermission of the roast, the Estonian group Gram of Fun will provide entertainment, and DJ Magnuss Eriņš will keep the dance floor alive. Actor Toms Liepājnieks will host the event.
Event attendees will also have the opportunity to explore the Tartu 2024 Art Mini Gallery, symbolically counting down the weeks until January 26, 2024, and learn about the European Capital of Culture’s program, plans, and Latvian participants.
