The penultimate round of matches in Latvia’s premier men’s football league, the Virsliga, sets the stage for an exciting championship showdown in the upcoming weekend’s final matches.
After 26 out of 35 matches, the top of the table features two formidable contenders – Rīga with 87 points and RFS with 86 points. Interestingly, these same two teams recently clashed in the Latvian Cup Final, with Rīga emerging victorious after a penalty shootout.
The current Virsliga standings indicate that if Rīga secures a win against the reigning champions, Valmiera, on Saturday, November 11, they will claim the championship. However, if Rīga loses or plays to a draw, and RFS secures a victory against Metta/LU, then RFS will be crowned champions.
Valmiera, although significantly behind RFS and Rīga with 52 points, still has a chance to secure third place if they defeat Rīga. Currently, they sit in fourth place, trailing FK Auda, who have shown remarkable improvement throughout the season.
FK Auda’s recent triumph over Tukums secured them at least fourth place and a spot in European competition for the first time in their history next season. However, they aim to conclude their remarkable season on a high note with a victory against Daugavpils on Saturday, which would elevate them to the third position.
With numerous possible scenarios in play, the final round of matches promises to be a thrilling spectacle, with all games scheduled to kick off at 13:00 on Saturday.
